Overview

This guide runs through how to install the VPN at Shaw Hill.

Procedure

Installation

  • Login as Admin.
  • Create a local account on the computer NOT a domain account for example home9.
  • Ensure this local account is in the local administrator group.
  • Log out of Admin.
  • Login to the local account by typing .\username and then password e.g. .\home9
  • Download the FortiClient from https://www.forticlient.com/downloads
  • After install look in the taskbar background tasks for the FortiClient shield.
  • Right click the shield and select Open FortiClient Console.
  • Tick the Acknowledgement then click the I Accept button.
  • Click the Configure VPN link.
  • Ensure the SSL-VPN tab is highlighted.
  • Type in connection named of Shawhill Network.
  • Type description of Shawhill Network.
  • In Remote Gateway type 82.219.86.61.
  • Tap the customise port square to tick it.
  • Type in port number 4443.
  • Click Save.
  • You should be presented with the FortiClient VPN page. The VPN name Shawhill Network should be pre-selected.
  • Copy the drives.cmd file to the windows desktop.
  • Go to c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc.
  • Rename hosts, hosts.old.
  • Copy the hosts file you received to c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc.

Testing

  • Make sure you are not on the Shawhill Network, by either connecting to another network or tethering to your phone.
  • In Windows 10 search bar, type Internet explorer and select it.
  • Click Settings.
  • Click the Advanced tab.
  • Scroll down and tick TLS1.1 and TLS 1.2 and SSL3.0, if these are not already ticked, and save settings.
  • If these settings are greyed out, put the user into the local administrator’s group on the PC/Laptop.
  • Open the FortiClient Console, if it is not already open, as per instructions above.
  • Type in a username from the list you have.
  • Type in password for the user from the list you have.
  • Click Connect.
  • At 40% another window will appear behind the app icon in the task bar.
  • Click on this and select Yes to enable the certificate.
  • VPN will then connect to the network.
